This is such powerful writing. You tell the story with a clarity that makes every emotion land, from the shaking hands in the parking lot to the strange mix of relief and heartbreak in the courtroom. You show so clearly how trauma has its own timing and how even “finally” can hurt.

What really struck me was the way you held all the truths at once. The violence, the love that once existed, the boys’ devotion, the destruction, the relief of safety, and the grief for what could never be. That kind of honesty takes real courage.

The moment with Eli calling your husband “Dad” was incredibly moving. It says so much about healing happening quietly, in its own time, even in a family still carrying so much.

If I can offer one gentle thought, it’s that you don’t need to shape this into a tidy narrative. The mix of grief, anger, relief, and hope is already the truth, and you captured it beautifully.

Thank you for sharing something this raw and real. It will mean a lot to people who’ve walked even a piece of this road.
